Growing Construction Sector To Create More Jobs?

The construction sector is showing no signs of slowing down, which is great news for those looking for jobs in the industry.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released its latest construction output figures recently, revealing that monthly output rose by 0.4 per cent in volume terms in September 2022.

It also increased by 0.6 per cent and 0.2 per cent in August and July, which means the annual rate of construction output hit 5.7 per cent over the year leading to September.

Despite the challenging financial climate, output remains four per cent higher than it was pre-pandemic, with repair and maintenance having grown by 12 per cent since February 2020 too.

New work was the main contributor for the monthly increase in September, with output growing by 0.6 per cent. Indeed, new private housing was valued at £3,484 million, while public housing was £463 million, a rise of five per cent from August.

There could be even greater demand for tradespeople who can help with the building of houses, if the government wants to meet its ambitious target of developing 300,000 new homes per year by 2025.

Despite former Prime Minister Liz Truss wanting to abolish the targets, housing secretary Michael Gove confirmed the commitment.

When speaking to BBC journalist Laura Kuenssberg recently, he said challenges, including rising cost of materials, global supply chain problems, and a tight labour market, would not stand in the way of trying to achieve the housing goals.
